Demonstrating Point of View with "The Hunger Games"

Students watched this scene from The Hunger Games and then narrated it from different points of view.

First Person:
The black-bearded man sipped his wine, as if he had no care in the world. Looking at him, I stated my title, “Katniss Everdeen, District twelve”. This was my moment. All eyes were on me. I slowly pulled my bow back, aiming my arrow directly at the target. I was sure it was precise. Now it was time to let go. I released my arrow, only to watch it land far from the target. My eyes did a 180 and all I could see was the act of mouths moving, as the sound of laughter surrounded me. I was totally shocked; I just could not believe it. How could this possibly be worse?
I knew I must be precise the second time. I pulled my bow back, eyeing the target. This time, I had it. I could feel it inside of me. I released pressure of the arrow, letting it free. Sparks eliminated my soul as I watched it land exactly where I aimed. This time, no one laughed at me, but when I realized what everyone was doing instead, the feeling of disgustment that took over my stomach was even worse than the last time. Not one person had even watched me shoot the bow, rather they were busy forking a huge pig that was lying on a table. I was enraged. I grabbed my bow and shot an arrow next to them, without second thought. They looked at me, completely stunned. I bowed and sarcastically said, “Thank you for your consideration”. Then, with confidence, I walked out of the room.

Third Person Limited:
Going in for her audition, alone and scared, Katniss Everdeen entered the room full of scouts. It was her time to show the judges whether she had shooting skills or not. She seemed nervous at first as she grabbed her arrow and stepped foot to the line
As her arrow went up into the air, the judges watched. She completely missed her target, which caused everyone watching to laugh uncontrollably. Katniss then had a second try. This shot was either a make it or break it moment. She hit the target spot on in the center. Although Katniss did well on her second attempt, she realized that it was hard for the judges to detect her skills due to her completely different attempts.
Katniss looked around as if she had an idea. She saw a group of people eating and enjoying themselves. One thing that seemed to stick out to her was a red apple that a man was holding. She contemplated what to do and then she aimed. Although this was risky, she hit the apple dead in the center.
By doing this, Katniss proved her accurate aim and her impressive skill. The judges were shocked because their first impression of her was corrected by how good she ended up shooting the second and third time.

Third Person Omniscient:
As Katniss walks in the room, all eyes are on her. She walks towards the target. As she lifts her bow, she feels the eyes staring at her back. Katniss begins to feel nervous. She shoots, but misses. Seneca Crane laughs along with the rest of the sponsors. Some tributes are better than others, he thinks as he turns away from Katniss. He begins to talk to the Capital members, ignoring Katniss.
Katniss is embarrassed that she missed the first shot. She was so nervous that she moved her bow at the last second. She can’t let it happen again. She picks up another arrow and aims at the target. She makes a perfect shot, right in the heart. She stands back to admire her work, but notices that none of the Capital members were watching. Seneca Crane even has his back toward her, talking about the hog on the table.
This angers Katniss. She decides she has to get their attention. She picks up a third arrow. She aims right for the apple in the hog’s mouth. Katniss makes a perfect shot and pins the apple to the wall. The room is silent. Seneca Crane is shocked. He looks from the apple, to Katniss, and back again. No one expected this girl from District 12 to be any good.
“Thank you, for your consideration,” Katniss says as she curtsies. She turns and walks out the door.
